For many women, large, disproportionate breasts are a source of significant physical and psychological discomfort—they cause back, shoulder, and neck pain, skin irritation under the breasts, and make it difficult to perform daily activities or participate in sports. Breast reduction helps restore body proportions, improve well-being and self-confidence, and, above all, relieve pressure on the spine and musculoskeletal system. In cases of extreme breast hypertrophy (gigantomastia), the weight of a single breast can reach as much as 2.5–3 kg. Such a heavy load strains the joints and spine, and the chest muscles and skin are unable to hold them in their natural position. For this reason, breast reduction is often medically indicated—it corrects posture defects, reduces back pain, and improves the quality of daily life.

What does a breast reduction procedure involve?

During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess fatty, glandular, and skin tissue, and then reshapes the breasts to give them a new, more proportionate contour. The procedure requires great precision, as in addition to reducing breast volume, it is also necessary to lift and reshape the breasts to achieve a natural, harmonious result. Depending on the patient’s needs and the degree of hypertrophy, the surgeon may use various incision techniques—around the areola and vertically downward (“I”), or around the areola, vertically, and in the inframammary fold (“inverted T”). The choice of method is individualized and takes into account the patient’s anatomy, skin condition, and expectations regarding breast shape.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts between 2.5 and 4 hours. In most cases, the patient stays in the clinic for 1–2 days, which allows doctors to monitor the healing process and remove the drains that carry away excess fluid. After the surgery, a special postoperative bra is fitted to stabilize the breasts, prevent swelling, and support their proper positioning. It must be worn around the clock for about 4 weeks, removed only for checkups and to have the stitches removed (7–14 days after the procedure).

The first few days after surgery are accompanied by a feeling of tightness, swelling, and mild pain, which subside over time. Within a few weeks, the patient can return to her daily activities, though the full recovery process and the final shaping of the breasts can take up to 12 months. The results of the procedure are permanent and visible—the breasts become smaller, firmer, more symmetrical, and better proportioned to the body, and the patient regains comfort and freedom of movement.

Results and Recovery

In the first few days after the procedure, your breasts may be swollen, tender, and feel firmer to the touch—this is a natural reaction of the body. The swelling gradually subsides, and your breasts take on their final shape. You can usually resume light activities after 2–3 weeks, but full recovery can take up to a year. During this time, the tissues heal completely and the final appearance of the breasts stabilizes.

Breast reduction surgery is always combined with a breast lift, which helps achieve a natural, harmonious aesthetic result—smaller yet firm and proportionate breasts that complement the patient’s figure.

I recommend Dr. Artur Pasternak. I had breast reduction surgery in October. After six months, I can say with a clean stroke that everything went very well. The effect is as I expected. Recovery after the surgery even better than I expected.

I highly recommend! The doctor has operated on me twice this year, and I have another surgery scheduled for next year. On March 17th, I had breast reduction surgery from size 85JJ, and on June 2nd, I had an abdominoplasty after losing over 35kg :) I am scheduled for a thigh lift. The doctor is professional, empathetic, and explains everything precisely. Excellent post-operative care. Dr Szczyt Clinic in Wilanów is fantastic. Contact with Dr. Kochan, both before and after the surgery, is outstanding. I highly recommend him, especially if it's your first surgery and you're scared. You will definitely feel well taken care of by Dr. Kochan :)

At the beginning of February, I underwent breast reduction surgery performed by Dr. Zofia Bochen. Dr. Bochen is a fantastic, empathetic specialist and a BRILLIANT DOCTOR. She is a virtuoso in her field. Despite significant asymmetry, she managed to achieve beautiful, even breasts without implants. I am very happy that I had the surgery at Dr. Szczyt Clinic—it was the best decision I could have made. Special thanks also to the nurses—I cannot imagine better care before and after the procedure. Thank you 💚
