Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is an excessive accumulation of pigment, i.e. melanin, in specific areas of the skin. It manifests as darker spots or discoloration, which may appear after sun exposure, inflammation, acne, injury, hormonal changes, or the use of certain medications. Discoloration can vary in depth and cause, so not all cases require the same management. Sudden, irregular, or changing pigmented lesions should be assessed by a dermatologist.
