Photosensitizing medications are preparations that can increase the skin's sensitivity to UV radiation or the light used in certain in-office procedures. The reaction may manifest as redness, burning, a rash, discoloration, or changes resembling a sunburn. Substances with such potential include selected antibiotics, retinoids, anti-inflammatory drugs, diuretics, and herbs, e.g. St. John's wort. Before procedures using light or lasers, the specialist should be informed about all medications and supplements being used.
