What is a lip lift and how does the procedure proceed?
A lip lift is a plastic surgery procedure that allows for permanent improvement of the proportions of the lips and lower part of the face. The procedure, which takes about 45-60 minutes, is performed under local anesthesia, making it virtually painless. It involves the precise removal of a designated section of skin from the area below the nose, which shortens the length of the nasolabial fold and gently “turns out” the red part of the lips. This corrects the shape of the lips and improves their proportions, giving them a subtle, natural enlargement effect.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small, precise incision in the natural crease of the skin just below the nose or inside the nose, in a shape resembling bull's horns – which is why this procedure is also known as a bullhorn lip lift. After the operation, the wound is sutured, and thanks to its location, the scar becomes virtually invisible once it has healed completely.
How to prepare for the procedure?
Before undergoing a lip lift procedure, it is necessary to consult a plastic surgeon to discuss the details of the procedure and the patient's individual expectations. Laboratory tests, including blood count, coagulation profile, HBS antigen, and HCV antibodies, are also required. It is also important, after consulting with your doctor, to avoid medications that affect blood clotting for 14 days before the planned surgery.
People who meet certain criteria regarding the proportions of their face and lips are eligible for the procedure. A lip lift is particularly recommended for people with a thin upper lip, teeth that are not visible when speaking or smiling, and a distance of at least 15-20 mm between the upper lip and the base of the nose.
Recovery after lower facelift
After the procedure, a subtle dressing is applied to the suture site and remains on the wound until it is completely healed. Immediately after the procedure, the patient can leave the clinic, but for the first 24 hours they may experience a slight tingling and burning sensation, which usually subsides quickly. For a few days, there may be slight swelling around the mouth, which is a natural part of the healing process. Although the effect of the upper lip lift is visible immediately, the full results can be assessed after about two weeks.
During recovery, facial expressions should be limited and a liquid diet consisting of smoothies and cream soups consumed through a straw should be followed, avoiding hard foods. This will prevent the skin from stretching and speed up the healing process. If necessary, painkillers prescribed by your doctor may be used. Although the procedure leaves a scar, it is so small and hidden in the crease of the skin under the nose that it will be virtually invisible once healed. Following the recommendations will allow you to quickly return to your daily activities and achieve satisfactory aesthetic results.
Contraindications to lip lift
Lip lift procedure is intended for adults who meet certain criteria for the proportions of the face and lips. However, there are contraindications that may prevent the procedure. These primarily include chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases or unregulated hypertension. People with blood clotting disorders, undergoing oncological treatment or suffering from autoimmune diseases are also ineligible for the procedure.
Contraindications also include any skin inflammation, including herpes, acne, or other infections around the mouth. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also not undergo this procedure. A thorough consultation with a plastic surgeon and the required tests will allow for an assessment of whether the patient meets all the conditions for the safe performance of the procedure.
