What does a trichology consultation consist of?
The first step is a detailed interview with the patient, during which the trichologist collects information on: general health, past medical history, medications and supplements taken, dietary habits, hair and scalp care, as well as lifestyle and stress levels. An analysis of these factors allows a preliminary determination of potential causes of the problem.
Only the next step is trichoscopy, which is a non-invasive examination of the scalp and hair using a specialized device, a microcamera or dermatoscope. By magnifying the image (up to 1,000 times), the specialist evaluates:
- The condition of the scalp (e.g., the presence of inflammation, psoriasis, seborrhea),
- hair structure and density,
- condition of hair follicles,
- sebaceous gland function.
If further diagnosis is necessary, the trichologist may order additional laboratory tests, including blood count, thyroid hormone levels (TSH, fT3, fT4), ferritin, vitamin D3, B12, zinc or CRP levels. Based on the collected information and test results, a personalized therapeutic plan is prepared, which includes both home care recommendations, selection of appropriate cosmetics as well as supplements, but also a comprehensive protocol of trichological treatments and diet and lifestyle tips.
In the case of complex problems, the trichologist can refer the patient to other specialists, including a dermatologist, endocrinologist or nutritionist.
What are the indications for a trichology consultation?
A trichology consultation is recommended primarily for excessive hair loss - loss of more than 50-100 hairs per day may indicate internal disorders, including nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disease, hormonal disorders, stress or medication side effects. However, indications include:
- Thinning hair, which can result from androgenetic, telogenetic or alopecia areata,
- baldness:
- androgenic – related to the activity of sex hormones,
- telogen - characterized by temporary hair loss,
- alopecia areata - autoimmune.
- dandruff, which is the peeling of the epidermis of the scalp,
- seborrheic dermatitis - an inflammatory condition of the scalp associated with excessive seborrhea,
- Iitching, burning or irritation of the scalp, which can be the result of allergies, fungal infections or improper care,
- hair structure disorders, such as brittleness or split ends.
For many, the reason for the visit is to improve the overall condition of the hair and scalp - part of the trichology consultation is the aforementioned selection of appropriate hair care products and treatments to support hair and scalp health.
If you have any of the above problems, it is advisable to consult a trichologist, who will take a detailed history, perform the appropriate diagnostic tests and propose an individualized treatment plan.
How to prepare for a trichology consultation?
To ensure an effective trichological consultation, it's important to prepare properly for your visit. It is recommended that you do not wash your hair for 24 hours before the appointment. This allows the specialist to assess the natural condition of your scalp and the activity of your sebaceous glands. On the day of your visit, do not use any styling products, including hairsprays, mousses, or gels, and do not dye your hair for at least 14 days before the consultation. It is also helpful to bring your current blood test results and a list of any medications and supplements you are taking. In addition, preparing information about the hair care products you use will help the specialist make a more accurate assessment and choose the right treatment plan for you.
Are there contraindications to consulting a trichologist?
A trichology consultation is not invasive, but there are situations in which it is necessary to consult another specialist before undertaking trichology therapy. When is it a good idea to consult a dermatologist before seeing a trichologist?
If you experience symptoms such as:
- fresh wounds, ulcers or open lesions on the scalp,
- active scalp infections (e.g. fungal, bacterial, viral),
- visible skin lesions, such as spots, scabs or redness,
- scalp diseases that require specialized medical care.
On the other hand, contraindications to trichological treatments alone are:
- pregnancy and lactation,
- active infections of the scalp,
- autoimmune diseases in the active phase,
- taking anti-inflammatory drugs,
- tendency to develop keloid scars,
- cancer.
In such situations, it is advisable to consult with a health care provider before undertaking treatments.
