What is an ultrasound?
Ultrasonography is a medical imaging technique that uses sound waves to create images of internal organs and tissues. It is widely used in the diagnosis of many diseases. The test is also used in plastic surgery.
- Diagnostics. Ultrasound helps evaluate tissue structure before planned surgeries, which allows better planning of the procedure.
- Treatment of complications. After some surgeries, ultrasound allows monitoring the healing process and detecting possible complications, such as hematomas or abscesses.
- Support in procedures. During some procedures, such as implant removal or scar correction, ultrasound is used to precisely locate anatomical structures to reduce the risk of damage and complications.
Ultrasound is also an invaluable aid to rehabilitation in terms of diagnosis and monitoring the progress of treatment.
- Injury diagnosis. Ultrasound allows assessment of the condition of muscles, tendons and ligaments, which is particularly useful in the case of injuries (not only sports injuries).
- Monitoring treatment. With ultrasound, specialists are able to monitor the tissue healing process in real time and adjust the rehabilitation plan to the individual patient's needs.
- Biofeedback. Ultrasound is also used in therapy as a biofeedback tool, helping patients learn how to properly engage specific muscle groups.
How does the ultrasound examination proceed?
During the examination, the patient lies on a diagnostic table. A special gel is applied to the skin to improve the conduction of ultrasound waves. The doctor then moves the head of the ultrasound machine over the skin in the area of the organ being examined. The image obtained as a result of the examination is displayed on a monitor and can be saved in the form of photos or video.
Are there contraindications to ultrasound?
Ultrasound (USG) is considered one of the safest and most comprehensive diagnostic methods. It is non-invasive, painless and does not use ionizing radiation, making it suitable for patients of all ages, including pregnant women. However, in certain situations, there are contraindications or cautionary recommendations for its performance.
- Open wounds, burns and skin injuries. In the case of open wounds, burns or fresh injuries at the site of the planned examination, ultrasound cannot always be performed because it may cause pain or discomfort and increase the risk of infection. In such cases, the doctor may decide to postpone the test or use an alternative diagnostic method.
- Allergy to contrast agents. In standard ultrasound, contrast agents are not used. However, in some cases, such as abdominal ultrasound, it may be necessary to use microbubble contrast. If you have a history of allergic reactions to contrast agents, inform your doctor, who may decide to use an alternative diagnostic method or perform the test without contrast.
- Pregnancy. Ultrasound is one of the primary methods of monitoring pregnancy and is considered safe for both the mother and the developing fetus. It is performed routinely in every trimester of pregnancy. However, if it is necessary to use a contrast agent, especially in the first trimester, the decision to perform it should be made by a doctor after a thorough evaluation of the benefits and risks.
