What is trichoscopy?

Trichoscopy is a modern, non-invasive diagnostic test that allows a detailed assessment of the condition of the scalp and hair structure. The trichoscope is equipped with a high-resolution camera that allows the image to be magnified up to 500 times. This allows the specialist to accurately view hair follicles, follicle outlets, blood vessels and the surface of the scalp, allowing early detection of a variety of conditions and problems related to the hair and scalp.

How does the trichoscopic examination proceed?

Before the examination, the specialist takes a detailed history of hair and scalp problems. Then, using a trichoscope, the doctor performs a trichoscopic examination - analyzing the condition of the scalp and hair structure in selected areas (e.g. frontal, temporal, occipital). The images obtained are analyzed by a specialist, who, based on them, makes a diagnosis and proposes appropriate treatment.

The entire examination usually takes about 30 minutes and requires no special preparation.

Who can benefit from trichoscopy?

Trichoscopy is for people who.

  • Are struggling with excessive hair loss,
  • Have problems with the scalp (such as itching, dandruff, redness),
  • Have noticed changes in hair structure (e.g., brittleness, thinning),
  • want to monitor the effects of the therapy used.

The test is safe and can be performed on people of all ages, including children and pregnant and lactating women.

Effects of trichoscopy

With trichoscopy, it is possible.

  • Assessment of hair density and hair shaft structure,
  • Identification of the type of alopecia (e.g., androgenic, telogen, alopecia areata),
  • Assessment of the condition of hair follicles and scalp,
  • Monitoring the effects of therapy and adjusting the treatment plan.

Contraindications to the procedure

Trichoscopy is a safe and non-invasive examination that has no immediate contraindications. However, before performing it, it is recommended not to wash hair 72 hours before the test, not to use hair styling cosmetics (e.g. hairspray, mousse), not to color hair 2 weeks before the test.

FAQ

Answers to frequently asked questions about a variety of treatments and procedures.

Is trichoscopy painful?

No, the trichoscopic examination is completely painless and non-invasive. During the procedure, the specialist applies a device to the scalp. The entire process is safe and comfortable for the patient. It does not require anesthesia or special preparation, and you can return to your daily activities immediately afterwards.

How often should trichoscopy be performed?

It is recommended that trichoscopy be performed every 6-12 months, but the frequency should be tailored individually to the needs of the patient and the recommendations of the specialist. For diagnosis and monitoring of treatment progress, this examination is usually performed every 3-6 months. However, in situations requiring detailed analysis, such as assessing the effectiveness of therapy, it may be advisable to perform trichoscopy more frequently. The final decision on the frequency of the examination is made by the doctor based on the patient's health condition and the type of trichological problem.

Can trichoscopy detect scalp diseases?

Yes, the test can identify conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis or ringworm of the scalp.
