This examination is the basis for the proper diagnosis of the causes of hair loss, baldness or dermatological problems of the scalp, as well as monitoring the effects of trichological and dermatological therapy.
What is trichoscopy?
Trichoscopy is one of the most accurate diagnostic methods in trichology and dermatology. It allows the doctor to assess hair density, scalp condition, follicle outlets and the presence of inflammation.
Thanks to digital magnification of up to 500 times, it is possible to see changes invisible to the naked eye - such as microinflammation, miniaturization of hair follicles or early signs of androgenetic alopecia.
Trichoscopy also makes it possible to differentiate between different types of alopecia (androgenic, telogen, plaque, scarring alopecia), enabling effective treatment planning.
The test does not require any interference with the skin - no samples are taken, and the entire procedure is completely painless.
How does the trichoscopic examination proceed?
- Medical history - the specialist conducts a detailed interview to learn about the history of the problem, factors that can affect the condition of the hair (e.g. stress, diet, hormones) and the treatment methods used so far.
- Preparation and analysis - the doctor, using a trichoscope, evaluates different areas of the scalp (frontal, temporal, occipital).
- Photo documentation - high-magnification images are saved and analyzed by computer, allowing comparison of results in the future.
- Diagnosis and treatment plan - based on the microscopic image, the specialist formulates a diagnosis and recommends appropriate therapy.
The entire examination takes about 30 minutes and does not require any anesthesia or convalescence.
Who can benefit from trichoscopy?
Trichoscopy is for people who:
- Are struggling with excessive hair loss or thinning hairstyle,
- Have dermatological problems of the scalp (dandruff, seborrhea, itching, redness),
- noticed changes in the structure of the hair (brittleness, fragility, loss of shine),
- want to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment or monitor recovery after trichological treatments.
The test can be performed on people of any age - including children, pregnant and lactating women, as it is completely safe and non-invasive.
Effects and significance of trichoscopy
The study makes it possible:
- Assessment of hair density and quality,
- Determination of the hair growth phase (anagen, catagen, telogen),
- Assessment of the condition of hair follicle estuaries,
- Identification of the type of alopecia (androgenic, telogen, plaque, scarring),
- monitoring the effects of therapy,
- selection of an individual treatment plan - pharmacological, nursing or surgical.
Trichoscopy avoids unnecessary invasive examinations and speeds up the implementation of effective therapy.
How to prepare for the study?
Before performing trichoscopy, it is recommended:
- Do not wash your hair for 72 hours before the test,
- Do not use styling cosmetics (sprays, mousses, gels),
- Do not color your hair for 2 weeks before the test,
- Do not perform mesotherapy or trichological treatments on the day before the test.
Proper preparation allows for the most reliable results.
Contraindications
Trichoscopy is a safe and non-invasive test, so there are no immediate contraindications.
However, the test may be postponed in cases:
- Fresh wounds, cuts or infections of the scalp,
- Severe skin irritation after coloring or chemical treatments,
- the presence of a lot of hairspray or greasy preparations on the hair - which can hinder the image.
