What does implant removal involve, and what does the procedure look like?
Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure to remove previously inserted implants. It may be performed for medical reasons (e.g., implant rupture, development of fibrous capsule), aesthetic reasons (change in patient preference), or as a preventive measure.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 1.5 to 3 hours. Depending on your needs, it may also include removal of the pouch (known as a capsulectomy) and simultaneous breast contouring, such as a lift. The operation is usually performed through previous scars to prevent additional marks. After removal of the implants, stitches and dressings are placed.
How to prepare for implant removal surgery?
Preparation for surgery includes a consultation with a plastic surgeon, discussing the reasons for the decision and planning the scope of the procedure. The doctor also orders a set of preoperative tests: including blood count, APTT, INR, ECG and chest X-ray. A hepatitis B vaccination is also required.
One week before surgery, you should discontinue medications that reduce blood clotting, and be fasting on the day of surgery. It is also important to stop stimulants and avoid infections before the scheduled surgery date.
Recovery after implant removal
After the procedure, expect temporary swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness in the breast area. For about 4-6 weeks it is necessary to wear a special compression bra, which helps the healing process and breast shaping.
In the first few days, it is advisable to limit physical activity, and return to daily duties gradually. For a minimum of two weeks, you should avoid lifting heavy objects, using saunas, tanning beds and intense sun. The final effect of the operation can be assessed after several months.
What are the contraindications to the procedure?
The procedure cannot be performed in cases of pregnancy and breastfeeding, active infections, unregulated diabetes or hypertension, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune diseases or cancer, skin infections in the breast area.
The final decision on the possibility of surgery is made by the doctor after analyzing the results of the tests and consultations.
