Which procedures can be combined in a single operation?

Not every concern a patient brings to us involves just one area. Sometimes the problem covers the whole face, other times both the face and the body at once, or several areas of the body after pregnancy or major weight loss. That's when it's worth considering a combined operation - performing several procedures during a single surgical stay. Such an approach can mean one anesthesia, one hospitalization and one main recovery period, but only when medical qualification and the combined scope of the operation allow for it.

In our practice, we don't view combined procedures as a ready-made package for everyone. First, we assess health status, test results, expected operating time, type of anesthesia, and what the return to form will look like. Every major surgical procedure requires a consultation, pre-operative preparation, and a safe post-operative care plan.

When does combining procedures make sense?

Most often when one area affects how another is perceived. On the face, a good example is a situation where not only the cheeks and jawline sag, but also the eye area or the brows, or where the appearance of the upper lip is unsatisfying. In the body, we often work simultaneously on the abdomen, the breasts or liposuction, because only such a combination gives a coherent result. An example of this kind of combined procedure is Mommy Makeover: combining abdominoplasty, breast surgery and body contouring procedures can help avoid repeated anesthesia and shorten the overall recovery time.

This doesn't mean, however, that more is always better. A combined operation makes sense only when it's anatomically logical, medically safe, and realistic from a recovery standpoint. Sometimes it's better to perform several procedures during a single stay, and sometimes it's more sensible to spread the treatment over stages. This isn't decided by a wish list alone, but by a thorough consultation with the doctor and proper qualification.

Combined facial operations

Within the face, combinations are usually the most natural, because individual procedures work on neighboring areas. Deep Plane Face Lift works on the deep structures of the face, including the SMAS layer and facial muscles; a neck lift improves the contour of the neck and jawline; a temporal lift raises the area around the outer corner of the eye and the brows; eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat herniation around the eyes; and a lip lift shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip and improves lip proportions. A Brow Lift, in turn, opens up the gaze and lifts drooping brows. This lets us build a plan that rejuvenates the face cohesively rather than in isolated spots.

In our practice, combined facial operations may include, among others:

We choose such combinations when a patient wants to improve more than one facial feature at the same time. For example, a facelift alone can beautifully refresh the cheeks and jawline, but if the gaze still looks heavy due to excess eyelid skin, or the upper lip is barely visible, the overall effect isn't always complete. A combined operation then lets us work on the harmony of the whole face.

Combined face and body operations

This is a group of combinations that may seem less obvious at first glance, but is very practical for some patients. It involves situations where someone wants to address both a chosen area of the body and one facial detail during a single operation. A breast procedure may address volume or shape, rhinoplasty changes the proportions of the bony and cartilaginous parts of the nose, ear correction improves the appearance of the auricles, eyelid surgery works on rejuvenating the eye area, a temporal lift on the upper part of the face, and a lip lift on the proportions of the upper lip.

In our practice, combined face and body operations may include, among others:

In this group, qualification is especially important, because we're working on two different areas of the body during a single surgical stay. For some people this will be a convenient solution, since it means organizing their private and professional life around recovery just once. For others, a staged operation will be a better fit. There really is no universal formula here.

Combined body operations

Within the body, combined procedures most often make sense when several issues stem from the same life stage or the same change in body shape. A good example is the abdomen after pregnancy or after major weight loss: liposuction alone won't remove excess skin or tighten the muscles, and abdominoplasty alone isn't always enough for full contouring of the surrounding areas. Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat and tightens the abdominal wall, while liposuction contours selected areas of the body. BBL, in turn, is based on transferring the patient's own fat tissue taken from areas such as the abdomen, hips or thighs, so it naturally combines with extensive body contouring.

In our practice, combined body operations may include, among others:

It's worth noting that some of these combinations fit into the logic of so-called comprehensive body restoration. That's exactly why, for some patients, one well-planned stage makes more sense than several separate operations.

What should you keep in mind before deciding?

The most important thing is that we don't combine procedures automatically. Even if a given configuration is technically possible, the final decision always depends on health status, test results, expected operating time, type of anesthesia, and how extensive recovery will be. In organizing the process before the procedure, what matters is the consultation, test results sent in 2-3 weeks in advance, and preparation for the operation. On the day of the procedure, the patient meets with the anesthesiologist, surgeon and physiotherapist to discuss all the procedures and recovery.

All of this means the best question isn't "what can be combined?" but rather "what in my case is worth combining?" And that's exactly where it's best to start the conversation. During the consultation we can assess whether one complex operation would be better, or two shorter, more safely spaced-out treatment stages.

FAQ

Are combined procedures safe?

Combined plastic surgery operations are safe, but only after proper qualification. Technical feasibility alone isn't enough. We take into account health status, test results, total operating time, type of anesthesia, and how the body will cope with recovery. That's why we always decide on combining procedures individually.

Does a single operation mean shorter recovery than two separate procedures?

Most often it means one main recovery period instead of two separate ones, which for many people is a major organizational advantage. This doesn't mean, however, that the return to form will always be easy or very short. With a larger scope of operation, recovery can be more demanding, which is why good planning of the whole process matters so much.

Can any plastic surgery procedure be combined with any other?

No. Some combinations are very logical anatomically, like a facelift with eyelid surgery or abdominoplasty with liposuction, but there are also ones that require especially careful qualification, because they involve different areas of the body and a longer operating time. That's why we first assess the medical rationale and safety, and only then plan the final scope of the procedure.

Which combinations most often make sense after pregnancy or a major change in body shape?

We most often think then about procedures covering the abdomen, breasts, liposuction and sometimes aesthetic gynecology. One example of a combined plastic surgery procedure after pregnancy is Mommy Makeover. Combining procedures is a solution particularly worth considering when the problem concerns not a single detail, but the whole figure.

Can I decide myself which procedures I want to combine?

Of course, you can come in with your own idea, and that's very helpful during the first consultation with the plastic surgeon. However, the final plan is always established after a thorough interview and based on test results. Sometimes the doctor proposes exactly the scope you had in mind, and sometimes they'll modify it or spread the treatment over stages. Our goal isn't to perform as many procedures at once as possible, but to achieve a good result safely.
